I wouldn’t be where I am today without mentors.
Some saw potential I couldn’t see in myself yet. Others challenged me, pushed me, and gave me honest feedback when I needed it most.
And now, as a coach and educator, I get to play that role for other designers.
Something that’s just as fulfilling as it is humbling.
The best mentorships I’ve seen share a few common traits:
- Clarity. The mentee knows what they’re working toward, and the mentor understands how to support that growth.
- Honesty. Real, honest feedback is what helps someone level up.
- Consistency. Growth doesn’t happen in a single conversation. The best progress happens over time through regular check-ins, building trust along the way.
- Mutual respect. Mentorship is a two-way street. The mentee brings curiosity, effort, and follow-through. The mentor brings experience, perspective, and support.
If you’re looking for a mentor, start by identifying what you actually want to learn. Then look for someone whose work or career reflects that path. One whose story resonates with where you want to go.
And if you’re further along in your career, consider becoming a mentor yourself. It’s one of the most meaningful ways to give back to the design community. And, as with my experience you’ll learn just as much as you teach.
Mentorship has shaped every stage of my own career. It’s why I believe so deeply in creating spaces for designers to get guidance through coaching, education, or simple conversations that help clarify the next step forward.
If you’re a designer who could use that kind of support, I offer 1:1 coaching focused on career growth, portfolios, and confidence building. You can learn more or book a quick intro call.
Because no one gets there alone and the right guidance can change everything.
